We are pleased to announce Cat’s Tail, our new custom color for 2015!
Cat’s Tail is the sixth in the family of custom oil colors that Pygmalion’s has introduced to the artistic community in Bloomington, Indiana, and beyond. Manufactured by Gamblin Artists Colors of Portland, Oregon, Cat’s Tail is an oil color—but don’t let this limit your creative enthusiasm! Over the past few years artists have used our custom oil colors in everything from watercolors, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, printmaking, book arts and mixed media.
With Cat’s Tail Pygmalion’s is continuing its tradition of community involvement. One hundred percent of the proceeds from sales of each of our custom colors over the past six years has been donated to a local non-profit. This year’s color will benefit the Friends of Art School of Fine Arts Holiday Awards at Indiana University. The mission of the IU Friends of Art is to support the School of Fine Arts and its students through fundraising, education, and social engagement in the wider community.
Cat’s Tail is a unique transparent earth red color created by Autumn Bussen, an MFA painting candidate at IU. Why the name “Cat’s Tail”? For the custom color this year Pygmalion’s owner John Wilson asked customers to vote from a list of color names. The name Cat’s Tail won by a landslide, receiving almost twice as many votes as any other name. After choosing the name a contest was held to create a color based on the name, with Bussen’s color selected as the winner.
Painted thickly Cat’s Tail is a dark maroon color, but when applied thinly it becomes a transparent, warm earth red. It is also a powerful mixing color. Local artist Jim Sampson test mixed Cat’s Tail with a few colors of Speedball oil-based block printing inks. He came up with a nice pink which could be useful for a portrait painter, also an ocher, a warm black, even a deep and unusual turquoise color. To see some of Sampson’s color swatches please take a look at our Facebook album Cat's Tail Photos.
Cat’s Tail sells for $8.95 and will be on sale throughout the year 2015 at the store or by mail order. Artists from all disciplines are encouraged to use this new color and see how it can enhance their creative process.
Along with creating and selling the custom color, Pygmalion’s will continue its tradition of hosting a one-night show in mid-April of artwork created using Cat’s Tail. Delicious food and prizes for artwork will be offered. More details will be announced closer to the date. For photos from some of our previous custom color events please visit our Custom Color page.
